The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity

Our correspondence regarding the bells of Carlisle Cathedral dates back to 1919. At this time an inspection was carried out on the old bells, 6 bells 21 _ cwt in

Details of the old bells:

Bell Founder Date Weight (cwt)
1 J & W Langshaw of Carlisle 1659 5 _
2 Edward Sellar of York 1728 7 _
3 Lees & Wright of Nottingham 1608 9 _
4 C & G Mears of London 1845 13
5 I. B. Ancient 17
6 J& W Langshaw of Carlisle 1657 21 _

In 1924 the bells were augmented to eight by Mears and Stainbank and hung in a Pynkadoe (African hardwood) frame. Another inspection was carried out in 1985, the bellringers were aware that there were problems as the bells were difficult to ring. It was found that one bell was cracked and the construction of the canon retaining headstock on the 7th lead to it being very sluggish to ring, as well as going up wrong (the clapper being on the wrong side of the bell).

At this time the Council for the Care of Churches stipulated that the 5th, 7th and 8th should be retained if it was decided to replace the bells.

Between 1985 and 1999 various avenues were explored for the restoration of the peal, including: replacing them with a peal from another church, augmenting the eight to ten, and replacing them with a new peal. Eventually it was decided to install a complete new ring of ten in a new twelve bell frame, as a Millennium funded project.

The 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th of the old eight have been retained as clock/tolling bells. The Angelus is chimed on the 3rd, the 4th and 5th are service bells, the 7th is the passing bell and the 8th is the clock bell.

The old bells and frame were removed from the tower during the week commencing 3rd May 1999 and the new frame and bells were installed during August 1999.

The Bishop of Carlisle dedicated the new ring of ten on October 3rd 1999. Two trebles were added in November 2000 to complete the ring of twelve.
