Denby
Parish Council wish to erect a memorial to celebrate the life of
their
most famous past resident, John Flamsteed (1646 1719) the
mathematician and first Astronomer Royal at the Greenwich Observatory.
Denby Parish Council wanted to avoid having a statue, so they approached
local amateur astronomers for alternative ideas. A motorised celestial
globe (or planisphere) was proposed, with illuminated star positions
set into a sandstone plinth sourced locally. The Council accepted
this and the designer, Rod Tippett, was tasked to build and control
the project. John Taylor Bellfounders were commissioned to cast
the two interlocking hemispheres, each weighing about 2 _ cwt.
It is hoped that Sir Patrick Moore will be able to officiate at
the dedication ceremony in August. |

The oversized treble of
the existing six was recast and two new trebles were added. Reworked
wrought iron clappers were supplied for these three bells. When the
existing frame was installed in 1969 it was incorrectly fitted by
the local builder, leaving too little room for the new bells. Therefore
the whole frame had to be uprooted and repositioned to allow the
extension frame to fit in. This was done by local effort. The new
trebles were given by the community in Butleigh to commemorate the
Golden Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II and were dedicated in time
to ring out on the 50th anniversary of her accession.
