planisphere picture Denby Parish Council wish to erect a memorial to celebrate the life of their most famous past resident, John Flamsteed (1646 – 1719) the mathematician and first Astronomer Royal at the Greenwich Observatory. Denby Parish Council wanted to avoid having a statue, so they approached local amateur astronomers for alternative ideas. A motorised celestial globe (or planisphere) was proposed, with illuminated star positions set into a sandstone plinth sourced locally. The Council accepted this and the designer, Rod Tippett, was tasked to build and control the project. John Taylor Bellfounders were commissioned to cast the two interlocking hemispheres, each weighing about 2 _ cwt.
