- The 1920 Taylor carillon underwent its first major overhaul since installation. New headstocks were provided for the 14 smallest bells. New clappers and crownstaples for all the bells, new wiring fitted, new wire steadiers and adjusters and a new clavier to the American 2000 standard was made and installed. The work was done as part of a major refurbishment of the cathedral.

- A new ringing peal of 8 bells was formed by casting 7 new bells to fit in with the existing Taylor 1920 bell which has become the tenor. This was made possible by a bequest from the late Barbara Browse. All 8 bells were provided with new fittings and hung in a 2 tier cast iron frame.

The cast iron headstocks of the 6 bells were removed to Loughborough and fitted with new gudgeons and ball bearings. The clappers, crownstaples, pulleys and bell bolts were refurbished or replaced. In rehanging the bells the 5th and tenor were turned through 45° to reduce wear on the sound bow.

McShane, Baltimore

Two bells diameter 30 and 39 inches, notes C and G# were cast and shipped along with a 36 inch diameter bell, note G# for Canterbury School.

The canons were removed and the 10 bells were tuned and provided with all new ringing fittings and rehung in the existing frame which was installed in 1895. (photos bell, bells)

The existing 3rd was replaced. The old 3rd has been welded and will be used as a service bell. The four bells have been hung in a new cast iron frame designed to extend to 6. (photo slagging off)

Repairs and refurbishments were carried out to the fittings of the bells, including the lifting and cleaning of the ball bearing assemblies.

The cracked 4th was recast repeating the inscription in facsimile and adding another inscription. The existing fittings were adapted to suit the new bell.

The existing bell fittings were refurbished by the fitting of new gudgeons to the cast iron headstocks, ball bearings and rebushing and replacing of the clappers and the provision of new pulleys. A new external electro magnetic hammer was fitted to the tenor for an hour strike to operate.

- A new treble was cast for a benefactor and provided with a full set of ringing fittings and hung in the vacant pit of the existing timber frame to complete the ring of six. Brereton was the home of Wiiliam Lord Brereton who became the first Master of the Ancient Society of College Youths in 1637, aged 26.

The timber headstock on the 5th was replaced with a new cast Iron headstock. New gudgeons and ball bearings were fitted to the other five cast iron headstocks. The clapper and crownstaple units were refurbished and new rope pulleys were fitted.

Bells 2,3 and 5 were cast and equipped with ringing fittings to complete the ring of 6. The frame and the other 3 bells were installed in 1995.

The 6 Bowell bells were tuned and rehung with all new ringing fittings in the existing frame.

The manually operated chiming hammers were replaced with internal electro magnetic hammers and connected to an electronic keyboard with automatic, practice and direct playing facilities.

Refurbish the clappers, crownstaples, pulleys and wheels and
provide new bell bolts. Lift and clean the ball bearings and rehang
the 6 bells.

Two of the bells have been rehung with canon retaining headstocks.

The bearings on all the bells have been lifted and cleaned. The clappers, crown staples and pulley boxes have all been refurbished. A new end gate has been fitted to the frame between bells 5 and 6.

The 7th of the future 10 has been cast and fitted with ringing fittings and is ready for shipping.

The old six have been replaced with the four smallest bells from St Mary’s R C Church, Hillfield Street, Liverpool. Two trebles have been cast to complete the new six.

New gudgeons and bearings have been fitted to all the bells except the second.

Heaton, Bradford

The old corroded steel headstocks have been 8 bell chime dismantled and removed. New fabricated double channel steel headstocks that have been hot dip galvanised, have been fitted. The chiming hammers and support brackets have been cleaned and refixed to the existing chiming apparatus.

Seven new bells have been cast to go with the a second hand bell from St Paul’s Church, Bristol, provided by the Keltek Trust. All eight have been provided with ringing fittings and are to be hung in the old Escrick frame.
